Fabrica Gallery Extension - Completed Pictures
Posted by Tom Wainewright - 20 December 2016

Fabrica is a contemporary visual arts gallery located in a Grade II Listed former church in the heart of Brighton. CDMS Architects was appointed to design an extension to provide additional office space within a small disused yard at the rear of the property. The site was landlocked by an adjacent goods yard, with no access available except via the building itself. The new extension is located over three floors, providing a store room at ground floor and two floors of open plan office above. The extension is designed as a ‘floating’ box, separated from the existing building and the flint boundary wall of the goods yard by frameless glazing and clad with dark grey cement panels. More photos to be uploaded to the website soon!

The design features cedar cladding and a pitched zinc roof. A projecting stone clad porch provides an entrance feature to the front elevation. Internally, the house features a triple height living room with library gallery, two laminated plywood staircases and polished concrete floors throughout.

Planning Permission for Heathervale House
Posted by Nick Surtees - 06 December 2016

CDMS Architects has received planning permission for the refurbishment and extension of Heathervale House, a 3-storey commercial office block in Tunbridge Wells. The proposal involves stripping the existing building back to its original concrete frame, and re-cladding it with a stone finish using a lightweight steel framing system.

The design also introduces a large rear extension and two additional floors, accessible via a new entrance and circulation core. The additional fourth and fifth storey’s will be largely glazed, and set in from the existing footprint behind a bronze clad louvre screen providing protection from overlooking and solar gain. The new entrance and circulation core will be finished using bronze cladding and a full height glazed curtain wall. The main façade also features bronze clad box framed windows, that help to break up the bulk of the building.

The Stage 4 technical design is now being progressed, with the scheme due to commence in early 2017.

CDMS Architects visit Fir View and Powers House
Posted by Jed Williamson - 30 November 2016

We recently took a break from the office to visit two of our own projects in the South-West. After visiting Fir View, we made the short journey to the newly completed Powers House – a sustainably designed new build timber framed house in the Devon countryside.

The trip gave members of the team who hadn’t previously had the opportunity to visit the projects time to explore the houses and interrogate the design, followed by a pub lunch.

Further Planning Success

We have obtained another planning permission for more new homes in South London. The application for three new detached dwellings in the London Borough of Croydon was approved at the Planning Committee Meeting yesterday evening.

The houses have been individually designed to respond to the challenges on the site with a contemporary take on the existing street scene. With private parking and large amenity spaces, the mix of 4 and 5 bedroom units will provide much needed homes for the area.

Planning has been submitted for a new development of 3 houses in Lyme Regis, Dorset. The proposals involve the substantial refurbishment and upgrade of a large, existing chalet style home and flat, into two 4 bedroom properties, and the construction of a contemporary 5 bedroom family home within the gardens of the same plot. The properties will share panoramic views over Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast. The design of the original chalet style property, and the contemporary home, will be visually tied together, through the use of timber cladding, and balconies that run along the western elevation.

CDMS Architects has received planning approval for the refurbishment and extension of an existing property within the Sussex countryside  The design sees the extension of an existing barn with a brick hipped end, alongside a new contemporary extension which includes a frameless glass entrance, open plan kitchen and sitting area, and two bedrooms at first floor. A master suite is located at the lower ground floor, accessing a private sunken garden featuring a reflection pool.
