CDMS Architects was appointed to undertake the refurbishment of Brighton Language College on the Old Steine, adjacent to the Brighton Pavilion. The scheme involved the full refurbishment and re-planning of the existing six storey office space. CDMS had worked on a previous project for the owner of number 6 & 7 Old Steine, which involved repair works to the exterior fabric. The tenant proposal was to connect number 5 (BLC’s existing property) to the listed double frontage of number 6-7. CDMS were appointed to enliven the existing space and give it a youthful character as well as catering for the functional aspects of a school.
CDMS conducted extensive studies into BLC's previous spaces to determine what was already working successfully and where improvements could be made in term of both student and staff experience. This looked in detail at how the existing spaces were used across the year as occupancy and utilisation of spaces is significantly higher during the summer season when the students arrive. These studies subsequently fed back into the brief to further refine the requirements of the new spaces. A key feature included in the brief was a large purpose designed area on the lower ground floor which will be used specifically as a student socialising space and social hub, which prevented large groups of students congregating on the pavement outside the building. The project commenced on site in December 2014 and took approximately 5 months to complete, just in time for the students to start arriving for the summer.
